Over the past eleven years now, Marvel Studios had built a super franchise unlike anything the movie world had ever seen before. More than just launching an incredible run of multiple series, each of them centering on unique characters and establishing their own specific aesthetics, these movies have also maintained an immensely complex continuity that expands with each new story. Based on a script written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (who previously wrote four of the best films in this franchise), the movie picks up from following the shattering events of previous year’s Avengers: Infinity War, and finds the surviving heroes (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlet Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, and Brie Larson) trying to figure out how to move on after Thanos (Josh Brolin) successfully managed to conquer all the six Infinity Stones and wipe out half of all life in existence in the Universe.
Using both their brawn and their brains, they slowly come up with a plan that they hope will not only lead to overpowering the Mad Titan, but also right the drastic wrong that had been inflicted on the universe.
Avengers: Endgame is in a way a disappointment to watch and, yes the central plot device here does not, in itself, deliver the shock. But the sheer fun and enjoyment that it delivers, the pure and exotic spectacle, are simply as irresistible as is its smooth way of combining the serious and the comic. Without the comedy, the drama would not have been palatable. Yet without the earnest, almost childlike belief in the seriousness of what is at stake, the funny stuff would have not worked either. As an artificial creation, the Avengers have been triumphant, and also as an entertainment package, they have been marvelous.
