Shakuntala Devi is a Bollywood Hindi-language biographical comedy-drama film that was released globally on the digital platform Amazon Prime Video on 31st July 2020. Directed by Anu Menon and jointly produced under the banners of Sony Pictures Networks India and Abundantia Entertainment, the film stars Vidya Balan in the lead role alongside Sanya Malhotra, Jisshu Sengupta, and Amit Sadh. Shakuntala Devi Story
The movie is based on the real-life story of Shakuntala Devi (played by Vidya Balan) through the eyes of her daughter Anupama Banerji (played by Sanya Malhotra).
The opening scene of the movie takes the viewers to 1930s Bangalore where the 5-year-old Shakuntala is seen casually calculating complex mathematical problems without any formal school education. This draws the attention of her father (played by Bishaw Mitra Mani). Soon she is taken to shows where we see Shakuntala performing these calculations for audiences, at first in India and later across different countries around the globe. As the story moves forward, we understand that while her equation with numbers was smooth, her personal equations with her family were not. The movie not only highlights the triumphant moments on stage during her Maths tours, but it also delves into her troubled relationships with her parents, the anger towards the men in her life, as well as the weary relationship with her daughter.

The soundtrack album of movie consists of four songs and has been composed by music composer duo Sachin–Jigar. All these songs have been released digitally by Zee Music Company. The lyrics of these songs have been written by Vayu and Priya Saraiya.
Shakuntala Devi Movie Reviews And Ratings
The movie received mixed reviews from critics. Although the critics hailed the performance of Vidya Balan, they criticized the fact that the movie was more about the mother-daughter relationship than the life of the protagonist.
The direction of Anu Menon was applauded for portraying the life of a woman whose story is so captivating that it is hard to look away. But the narrative somewhat seems to be rushed. In the movie, Vidya Balan blends under the skin of Shakuntala Devi and gives an amazing performance as Shakuntala from the 1950s to the 2000s. The film has been well-shot, keeping in mind the different time periods. Also, Vidya’s looks through these different periods blend well. Jisshu Sengupta in the role of Paritosh makes an impact in the movie along with Amit Sadh as Anupama’s supportive husband. Sanya Malhotra in the role of slightly older Anupama was also good.
