Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is a Bollywood Hindi-language biographical film that was released globally on the digital platform Netflix on 12th August 2020. Directed by Sharan Sharma and jointly produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios, the film stars Jahnvi Kapoor in the lead role along with Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in supporting roles. The film revolves around the life of the first Indian female air-force pilot, Gunjan Saxena. In 1999, Gunjan Saxena became India’s first woman Air Force pilot to fly Cheetah helicopters in the Kargil war zone. She was honored with the Shaurya Vir award for showing her bravery during the Kargil War.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl Story
The story revolves around Gunjan Saxena (played by Janhvi) who dreams of flying a plane since her childhood. After she finishes her 10th standard, she expresses her desire of joining a flying school. Although her mother and brother couldn’t expect her decision, her father Anup Saxena (Played by Pankaj Tripathi) permits Gunjan to experiment with her desire to become a pilot. However, Gunjan’s desire to join a flying school is thwarted by issues related to educational qualifications and high costs. But then Gunjan’s father comes across an advertisement in a newspaper where he saw that the Indian Air Force is accepting applications of Women Air Force Officers. Gunjan applies for it and becomes the only woman to get accepted.
The movies then follow her journey as an Air Force pilot, how she is subjected to gender discrimination at the workplace and went on to serve as the first woman Air Force pilot in the Kargil War.

Amit Trivedi has composed the music album and all the songs have been released digitally by Zee Music Company. The lyrics have been written by Kausar Munir who has also been credited for each track.

The movie got positive reviews from critics. Critics applauded Jahnvi Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi for their performances. The movie is not only about patriotism but also about a beautiful relationship between father and daughter. They felt that Jahnvi Kapoor was appropriate for the role of Gunjan Saxena. Since the Kargil War is the highlight of this movie, the film revolves around pilot training, helicopter sorties, and aerial combat scenes. The director Sharan Sharma has effectively portrayed the grit determination of Gunjan Sharma as well as the gender discrimination in the movie. All in all, it was a well-directed film.
